The following are some terms used in Naruto as well as this shrine. They are listed in alphabetical order.

Byakugan - The direct translation is "White eyes" because it turns the users eyes white, as well as stretches the muscles around the eyes. An advanced bloodline, byakugan is only possessed by certain members of the Hyuga clan. This ability allows the user to see 360° around him, as well as see a ninja's inner chakra system. This enables the user to do powerful internal damage including the controlling of chakra flow. Among the main characters in Naruto, Neji and Hinata possesses this ability.

Chakra - The energy needed for a ninja to perform most jutsu. Chakra consists of one's body's energy and one's spiritual energy, and a good ninja will combine the two together and control them equally, else chakra will be wasted. If a ninja runs out of chakra, he/she will not be able to use any techniques. The exception to this is some taijutsu moves, where the user doesn't need chakra to perform it.

Chuunin - One rank above a Genin; an average ninja. To become a chuunin, one must pass a complicated and elaborate exam, held only twice a year.

Genin - A "rookie" ninja. One who just graduated from the ninja academy. This is the lowest rank of ninja.

Genjutsu - The art of illusion. Techniques that fall under this category creates illusions that trap and confuse the enemy.

-kage - Denotes the head ninja in a country, also the strongest. There are 5 countries, and each has a prefix before the "-kage" depending on which country it is. For example, the Wind Country's head ninja is "Kazekage" and the Fire Country's head ninja is "Hokage." (Kaze = wind, Ho = fire)

Jounin - An elite ninja. This is the highest rank a ninja can be before becoming a -kage.

Ninjutsu - The art of the ninja. This term is used to generalize all of a ninja's skills, usually techniques.

Sharingan - An advanced bloodline possessed by the certain members of the Uchiha clan. Users' pupils turn red with black markings. It allows the user to see a move before it is carried out, as well as copy that move instantly. Among the main characters in Naruto, Sasuke, Itachi and Kakashi possesses this ability.

Shinobi - a ninja.

Taijutsu - The art of hand-to-hand combat. This is Lee's specialty. Techniques that fall under this category attempts to do external damage.
